The Luce Brothers originally operated here one of the mainstay "general stores" on the island in the late 19th and early 20th century.. Later, through a merger of grocers, this became the Smith-Bodfish-Swift (SBS) General Store. Later SBS focused on grain and farm and garden products at the Water Street annex. Eventually, in the 1960's-70's, the storefront became an antiques store and thereafter a department store until 2001, and different dry goods retailers since. The first floor Main Street spaces were fully rebuilt and have been occupied for over ten years while the remainder of the building has been undergoing significant rehab over the past few years with the plan to make space available in other sections as finished.
