Picture
This antique, historic old building used to serve as a workshop and dormitory for the Seaman's Bethel in the port at Vineyard Haven, formerly known as Holmes Hole. The building was moved to its present site in the 1970's and converted into a small residence. For years the old flywheel and gear from the shop used to remain in the living room.  The house does have a glimpse of the water, Sengekontacket Pond (which is 200 feet away)  and the State Beach beyond, from the front porch, but better from the second floor.  The home sits on a town maintained but historically unpaved road in an area known as "Ocean Heights" which is along the Edgartown - Vineyard Haven Road, regularly traversed by public buses and with a bike path connecting the entire island. This places you within a few minutes drive of Edgartown, Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven, the three main "down-island" towns.
