HISTORY OF THE BUILDING: The Luce Brothers originally operated here one of the mainstay "general stores" on the island in the late 19th and early 20th century.. Later, through a merger of grocers, this became the Smith-Bodfish-Swift (SBS) General Store. Later SBS focused on grain and farm and garden products at the Water Street annex. Eventually, in the 1960's-70's, the storefront became an antiques store and thereafter Murrays, a Vineyard branch of the iconic Nantucket department store until 2001, and different dry goods retailers since.
